Pool pump motor repair guide
Rebuilt pool pump motors vs new replacements
If your Hayward or Pentair pump is screeching, humming or refusing to start, you do not automatically need a new pump. Here is what a motor rebuild actually involves, what it costs in the Phoenix Valley, and how to tell in a couple of minutes whether your motor is worth saving.
What each option costs
| Option | Typical cost | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Rebuilt motor | $150 - $300 installed | Bearings and seals are worn, windings still test good |
| New replacement motor | $400 - $900 installed | Windings are shorted, or the motor is corroded through |
| Full pump replacement | Quoted on site | Cracked wet end, or you want a variable-speed energy upgrade |
Ranges are typical Phoenix Valley pricing for residential pumps up to 2 HP. Your exact price depends on horsepower, brand and what the on-site test shows.
How a pool pump motor rebuild works
- 1Pull the motor, tag the wiring and inspect the wet end and seal plate.
- 2Strip the housing and press out the worn front and rear bearings.
- 3Test windings for resistance, shorts and ground faults - this decides the job.
- 4Replace bearings, shaft seal, capacitor and any burnt terminals or leads.
- 5Clean and re-varnish where needed, reassemble and bench-run the motor.
- 6Reinstall, prime the pump and check amp draw and flow against spec.
Most rebuilds are done same day when we carry the bearing and seal kit for your model.
Is your motor a candidate for rebuilding?
Rebuild usually wins
- Loud grinding, humming or screeching - classic worn bearings
- Motor runs but is slow to start, or trips after the capacitor was replaced
- Single-speed or two-speed Hayward Super Pump / Pentair WhisperFlo
- Housing and wet end are intact, no cracked volute
- Motor is under roughly 8 years old
Replace instead
- Burnt-plastic smell or visibly scorched windings - shorted stator
- Motor was flooded or sat submerged after a monsoon storm
- Corroded through the end bell from chlorine vapor
- Variable-speed drive board failure - the fix is the drive, not a rebuild
- Rebuild quote is within about $100 of a new motor
Hayward and Pentair owners - what we see most
On Hayward Super Pump and Pentair WhisperFlo single-speed units, the motor almost always fails at the bearings first, and that is the cheapest repair on the pad. On Hayward TriStar VS, MaxFlo VS and Pentair IntelliFlo, the motor windings often outlive the drive electronics - so before anyone quotes you a full pump, the drive should be tested separately. Phoenix heat and chlorine vapor shorten motor life here, which is why we check the seal plate and end bell on every visit rather than just swapping parts.
Common questions
How much does a rebuilt pool pump motor cost in Phoenix?
A rebuild typically runs $150-$300 installed, depending on horsepower and which parts are replaced. A new replacement motor usually lands between $400 and $900, and a full variable-speed pump swap costs more again.
How long does a rebuilt pool pump motor last?
With new bearings, seals and a fresh shaft seal, a rebuilt motor commonly gives another 3-6 years of service - close to what you get from a new replacement motor of the same class, as long as the windings were still healthy.
Is rebuilding worth it on a Hayward or Pentair pump?
Usually yes on single-speed and older two-speed motors, where the wet end is in good shape. On newer variable-speed models the failure is more often the drive electronics than the motor itself, so we diagnose the drive first before quoting anything.
Can you tell over the phone if my motor can be rebuilt?
We can narrow it down from the sound and symptoms, but the call is made on site. We test amp draw, capacitor, windings and bearing play, then tell you straight whether a rebuild or a replacement is the better spend.
Not sure if your motor can be saved?
We test the motor on site and tell you honestly whether a rebuild or a replacement is the better spend - no upsell.
